WEEKEND FUN WHEN IN TURIN: MERCATINI DELL’USATO

Mercatino dell'usato

Today’s post is going to be all about the weekend. What to do, where & when, without spending Midas’s fortune and still getting to have loads of fun. If you’re looking for a colorful out-of-the-ordinary experience here in Turin this weekend or the coming ones, try one of the many mercatini dell’usato (i.e. flea markets) organized on the crowded city streets. My personal list includes:

Extravaganza Turin - each Saturday, piazza Carlo Alberto
Extravaganza Turin – each Saturday, piazza Carlo Alberto
  • EXTRAVAGANZA VINTAGE FAIR: the event is the brain-child of a cultural organization called “Effetto Vintage” (i.e. “The Vintage Effect”) and it is focused mainly on vintage and antique fashion items (clothes, shoes, handbags, jewels etc.) and home décor;  If looking for some old-time glamour or for some à la Audrey Hepburn accessories, give it a try, you might also have the opportunity of witnessing live fashion shows and the likes while you’re at it.

WHEN: each Saturday from 8 am to 7 pm

WHERE: Piazza Carlo Alberto, Turin

  • VINTAGE DELLA GRAN MADRE: organized by the same “Effetto Vintage” people, featuring much of the Extravaganza stuff, just a bit bigger, louder and well… Sunday-er.

WHEN: each 3rd Sunday of the month from 8 am to 7 pm

WHERE: Piazza Piazza Gran Madre e Via Vittozzi, Turin

Balon, Turin - each Saturday in Borgo Dora
Balon, Turin – each Saturday in Borgo Dora
  • BALON: the widest flea & collectors open fair in Europe, with a long lasting tradition and featuring more than 250 private vendors and neighborhood antique shops each time; since 2012, the fair’s symbol is the hot-air balloon anchored right in front of the Servizio missionario giovani (L’arsenale della pace), inviting locals and tourists alike to be 150 m high for an eagle view of the borgo and the other city peaks.

WHEN: each Saturday

WHERE: Borgo Dora (via Goffredo Mameli, via Borgo Dora e via Bernardino Lanino) and Porta Palazzo, Turin

Grand Balon, Turin - each 2nd Sunday of the month in Borgo Dora
Grand Balon, Turin – each 2nd Sunday of the month in Borgo Dora
  • GRAND BALON: tradition started in the ’80s, mirroring its’ “smaller” sibling, the Balon

WHEN: each 2nd Sunday of the month

WHERE: Borgo Dora (via Goffredo Mameli, via Borgo Dora e via Bernardino Lanino) and Porta Palazzo, Turin

Useful Tips: Beware of pickpockets, Turin is full of them, especially in crowded areas. Also, if you like something well enough to fancy buying it,  don’t be ashamed to bargain, bargain, bargain…
